ORLANDO, Fla. — If there was any doubt about how much the Nets need a player of Dwight Howard’s caliber, especially now, a season before their move to Brooklyn, he punctuated that point with a violent blocked shot early in the first quarter of Thursday night’s game, airmailing the ball from beneath the basket into the fourth row of the courtside seats.

The block drew a collective oooh and cheers, an expected reaction from the Orlando Magic’s partisan Amway Center crowd. But had this been the Prudential Center, the Nets’ arena, fans would probably have amplified the chant they started Tuesday in the home opener: “We want Dwight! We want Dwight!”
