Florida Air Academy Honored With Resolution

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida Air Academy was presented with an honorary resolution commemorating the school’s 50th Anniversary year by the Brevard County Commission.

The school was represented by Ms. Deborah Dwight, Academy Vice President, her daughter Caroline Kingsbury and nephew Paul Dwight, and the cadet Wing Diamond.

Kingsbury and Dwight are grandchildren of the Academy’s founders – Col. Jonathan Dwight and Mrs. Emmy Dwight Moses.

Faculty, staff, and parents attended the event as Commissioner Trudie Infantini read the resolution to those gathered, and then presented Dwight with a framed copy of the resolution.

Dwight thanked the Commission on behalf of the students and faculty, then remarked on the progress Brevard County has made in the 50 years since the Academy was founded.

“We have been proud to have been a part of this great county for the past 50 years, and we look forward to another 50,” said Dwight.

"Whereas, Florida Air Academy has also excelled in sports, with many state championships in basketball, baseball and track, and the FAA Air Force Junior ROTC program has been acknowledged by the U.S. Air Force as an “Honor Unit” for eight of the last nine years, placing them in the top 20% nationally."

Florida Air Academy Resolution

Whereas, Florida Air Academy is a fully accredited military-style college preparatory boarding and day school. It was founded in 1961 by Jonathan and Emmy Dwight, fulfilling Mr. Dwight’s dream of having a school modeled after the Air Force where young men could become well-prepared for college, learn self-discipline and leadership skills, and learn to fly, and;

Whereas, Florida Air Academy is celebrating the 50thanniversary of their founding and their 50th graduating class. It is a family enterprise now run by the Dwight’s children. Their son James is celebrating his 21st year as President and daughter Deborah is Vice President and has been at the school for 20 years, and;

Whereas, in the 1990’s Florida Air Academy began accepting local day students and in 2005 made the momentous decision to became co-educational, thereby raising the bar academically, in that three of the last five valedictorians have been young women; and

Whereas, academics are the top priority at Florida Air and helping children reach their academic potential is the highest goal The success is evident with the 100% college acceptance rate for their seniors for more than 30 years; and

Whereas, Florida Air Academy has also excelled in sports, with many state championships in basketball, baseball and track, and the FAA Air Force Junior ROTC program has been acknowledged by the U.S. Air Force as an “Honor Unit” for eight of the last nine years, placing them in the top 20% nationally; and

Whereas, Florida Air has become a truly international school with students representing over 20 states and 25 countries allowing for friendships with students from other cultures; and

Whereas, the unique military structure, academic program, dedicated and caring staff, and the extracurricular program, in a family atmosphere, contribute to the great success of Florida Air Academy.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA does hereby recognize and congratulate

on their 50th anniversary of educating and preparing young men and women for their futures.
