Eau Gallie Punches Ticket For Final Four

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – And then was just one.

Headed into Monday night’s prep softball regional championship games, two teams from Brevard County had a chance to advance to next week’s Final Four in Clermont.

Only one survived.

In the Class 4A regional title game, Keystone Heights eliminated the Space Coast Vipers, leaving Eau Gau as Brevard’s last hope for a state softball championship this season.

The Commodores didn’t disappoint.

Eau Gallie defeated Springstead on the road in Spring Hill 5-2 and claimed the Class 6A regional title.

It also earned Eau Gallie (28-2), a berth in the Class 6A state semifinals next Wednesday in Clermont.

The big hit for Eau Gallie against Springstead (24-4) came on senior catcher Rachel Engle’s two-run double in the fourth inning, handing the Commodores a lead they did not surrender.

Megan LaFon picked up the win for Eau Gallie, which is bidding to win a second consecutive state softball championship. Last season the Commodores won the Class 4A title before being bumped up to Class 6A play this year.

Eau Gallie will meet Niceville at 7 p.m. next Wednesday in Clermont with the winner qualifying for a spot in the FHSAA Class 6A championship game next Thursday night.

Prep baseball

Four Brevard County prep baseball teams will play in regional quarterfinal games today.

In Class 3A, Melbourne Central Catholic hosts Maitland Orangewood Christian.

Merritt Island visits Lake Wales in a Class 5A regional quaterfinal, while Auburndale is at Rockledge in another 5A regional quarterfinal.

In Class 7A, Viera travels to meet Winter Springs in the regional quarterfinals.
