BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Detectives with Palm Bay Police’s Major Case Unit are investigating the drowning of an infant identified as Jacob Whitney.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday police and firefighters responded to a call at 265 Nemo Circle NW after receiving reports of an infant found in a backyard swimming pool.

When rescuers arrived the male child was not breathing and unresponsive.

Attempts to revive the baby were not successful and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives conducted interviews with those present in the home and learned that the mother was home alone with her two children, a 3-year-old boy and the 1-year-old victim.

The great-grandparents returned home and found the mother in a back room of the home and the 3-year-old wandering about.

They were unable to locate the infant and immediately began searching for him.

The mother found the boy in the pool and jumped in to get him, but he was not breathing.

The investigation is continuing as detectives determine the circumstances that caused the boy to fall into the pool.
