Honoring the troops
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE BEACH, FLORIDA – Golf and combat do not usually go together, but in the Sanctuary Island Inc. Wounded Warrior Golf Tourney in Melbourne Beach, they were a perfect match.
On April 28, Sanctuary Island Inc., a 501 (c) (3) public charity servicing wounded warriors, disabled and children facing adversity and the Spessard Holland Golf Course in Melbourne Beach hosted a very special and heartwarming golfing event.
That day 10 sponsored veterans and active military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan were able to play golf and enjoy breakfast and lunch at Spessard Holland Golf Course.
The sponsored vets played with each other and against golf teams from the Cocoa Beach VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Ironmen and the Cocoa Beach VFW SkySoldiers, who claimed first place for the day.
Also playing in the tournament were golfers from EveryThing Brevard, Brevard Community College, Republican Club, Spessard Holland Golfers, USCG Confidence and retired Navy, Marines, and Air Force members and other residents of Brevard County.
Sanctuary Island’s Mascot Peter the Panda was dancing and golfing adding to the fun and prizes were plentiful.
Organizers thank all our sponsors, but especially our local businesses Macy’s Melbourne Square Mall (a gold sponsor) and local hole sponsors David’s Steak House, Max and Porky’s Indialantic, Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 , VFW Post 4206 Melbourne and donations from Melbourne Market, Melbourne Beach Publix, Hidden Acres Farm, Texas Roadhouse Palm Bay, TD Bank Indialantic, Golf Pro Tracey Wright and many wonderful other gifts.
