BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – With hurricane season having arrived, the Brevard County Boating & Waterways Program reminds boaters to prepare by having a plan to secure and protect their vessels.

Hurricane season opened June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

Boaters should develop a plan for securing their boats; inspect their marinas or docks for stability and piling height; collect vessel records; check lines to ensure no weaknesses have developed; outfit their boats with chafe gear and fenders, extra cleats, appropriate anchors and chains, and exhaust pipe plugs; and check bilge pumps, batteries, exterior lights and radio.

A guide titled “Your Boat and Hurricanes,” provided by the Coast Guard, provides an extensive checklist for protection against hurricane damage.

It is available on the Natural Resources Management Office website under the Boating & Waterways section.
