Fourth Quarter Dooms Brevard Rally

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Miami Rain led the Brevard Flame by as many as 22 points in the first half and cruised to a  95-79 win in a Womens’ Blue Chip Basketball League   game at Melbourne Central Catholic High School on Saturday night.

A slow start for the Flame followed a 22 minute delay of tip-off as the teams awaited the arrival of the officiating crew, who were assigned a game near the Tampa area just hours before.

Behind at halftime by 15, the Flame came out firing on all cylinders after the intermission behind the three-point shooting of Latoya Anderson and Marshay White, who provided some firepower and a spark for Brevard.

The Flame rallied all the way back to trail by only one point headed into the final period.

The three-point barrage, along with point guard Lynisha Nelson’s 14 points, could not withstand the Rain however, as the fourth quarter resembled much of the game’s first half rather than the tone set in the third period.

The Rain grabbed seemingly every rebound and loose ball in the game’s final minutes en route to what became a one-sided win for the visitors from South Beach.

“We made a strong run in the third,” said Flame coach Reuben Williams. “We boxed out and defended in the third and made our run, the d (defense) was lax in the fourth and we just didn’t box out.”

The Flame (0-5) is still looking for their first win of the season and will meet the Palm Beach Storm at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Melbourne Central Catholic High School gym in Melbourne.
