BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Police officers defused an explosive situation Monday while responding to a suspicious incident call in Palm Bay.

Public information coordinator Yvonne Martinez of the Palm Bay Police Department said officers arrived at 694 Altona Street N.W. shortly after noon  Monday and were informed by an 84-year-old resident that she had found something hazardous.

Martinez said the woman’s husband had recently died and in cleaning up the home, she found what appeared to be a military type ordnance.

Police officers examined the material and determined it to be explosives.

The residence was cleared and secured and the Brevard County Sheriffs Office Bomb Squad was notified and responded.

After speaking with bomb technicians, it was determined that an evacuation was not necessary.

Bomb technicians secured the ordnance and removed it from the residence for safe disposal.
