Our Emergency Room (ER) Wait Times are provided for informational purposes only as an approximation of the average time it takes a patient after registering to see a qualified healthcare professional (triage). Your actual wait time to be assigned to an ER bed, seen by an ER Physician, Physician Assistant, or Licensed Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner may differ from these times.
This is not a substitute for medical advice. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call 911 or your doctor.
When should I go to the ER?
ERs are not set up to optimally care for routine illness, and patients are not always seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, ERs use a triage system to ensure that the most critical patients get immediate care.
This allows patients with life-threatening injuries or illnesses, such as heart attacks, serious accidents, or victims of violent crimes to be treated first. People with less-serious injuries may have to wait before being treated.
Walk-in clinics, such as the Health First Physicians Cocoa Beach Walk-In Clinic and Health First QuickCare at Holmes Regional Medical Center, are the best choice for prompt medical attention when a patient cannot see his or her family doctor for a
NON-LIFE-THREATENING medical ailment.
These clinics typically treat coughs and colds, insect bites, infections, or injuries such as sprains, dislocations, sports injuries that may need stitches, minor burns, ear / nose / throat (ENT) problems, and minor workplace injuries.
These injuries typically are treated in less time in an urgent care setting than in the ER and often do not require hospital admission.
Emergency Rooms at Health First Hospitals
You never plan to visit an Emergency Room (ER), but, when you or a loved one need immediate care, it’s good to know that your local Health First hospital can handle any emergency with state-of-the-art treatment provided by skilled physicians, nurses, and technicians dedicated to emergency care.
Whether you walk in or are brought by ambulance, you will receive quality ER care at any of the four Health First hospital ERs located at Cape Canaveral Hospital, Holmes Regional Medical Center, Palm Bay Hospital, and Viera Hospital. All Health First hospital ERs are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (24/7).
What should I expect if I do go to the ER?
If you choose the ER, most patients are assessed in the Triage Room, then tests or treatments may be ordered that will involve the patient being moved to another area of the hospital, with waiting time determined by the patient’s clinical need. Patients with serious conditions, such as cardiac arrest, will bypass triage altogether when appropriate and be moved straight to the appropriate department for testing and/or treatment.
The resuscitation area is where the most serious patients will be treated as it contains the equipment and staff required for immediate treatment of life-threatening illnesses and injuries.
What kind of doctor will I see in the ER?
ER Physicians at Health First hospitals are Board-certified in Emergency Medicine. Less serious emergency cases may be seen by a Physician Assistant or Licensed Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. All physicians and staff are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
