BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Brevard Children’s Chorus is preparing to conduct auditions for singers in grades 4 to 10.

The Brevard Children’s Chorus will audition new singers Aug. 18. Back row: Ally Peccoraro and Lauren Burns, Front row: Christy Chadwick and Kara Marin (Image courtesy of Imogene Burns).

The auditions will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Central Church of Christ, 2010 N. U.S. Highway 1 in Cocoa.

Membership is open to students in public, private, charter and home-schools.

The group is directed by Joani Slawson, named a 2011 Distinguished Music Educator by the Yale School of Music.

“The art of music-making is more than just singing notes.  So every week, we work on integrating basic music theory, sight-singing and music history in the rehearsals to help make the experience meaningful and fun,” Slawson said.

The 30-plus voice group of youngsters performs at venues and events throughout Brevard County.

Launched in 2004, the mission of the choral organization is to teach and develop musically talented children who aspire to the highest levels of choral artistry.

Recent performances include the Family Concert with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, a holiday concert with the Brevard Community Chorus, Christmas Tree lighting ceremonies, Relay for Life, Fall for the Arts and more.

In December, the Brevard Children’s Chorus will join the Indialantic Chamber Singers for a holiday concert in Viera.
