BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Cocoa Police Department will once again be participating in the annual gun buy-back program today.

Cocoa Police Department public information officer Barbara Matthews said Cocoa officers will be partnering with members of the Rockledge Police Department in hosting the event at Byrd Plaza in Cocoa this morning.

Matthews said the gun buy-back will start at 7 a.m. and runs until officers run out of gift cards to exchange for guns.

Members of the public may exchange guns for a $50 gift card to Publix, Walmart or Winn Dixie and there is a limit of two per vehicle.

“We are asking people with guns to turn in to please get there early,” Mathews said. “We are asking citizens to put the gun (unloaded if possible) into the trunk of their car. As they pull into the parking lot they will be directed where to go.”

Gun buy-backs in Florida have been a popular method of reducing the number of firearms on the streets without fear of being prosecuted for possessing the weapon.

Byrd Plaza is at  801 Dixon Boulevard in Cocoa.
