BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Police are investigating an early morning shooting at an internet café in Melbourne.

The shooting took place Tuesday at the Allied Veterans of the World Café at 3299 S. Babcock Street in Melbourne.

Melbourne Police Department spokesman Sgt. Sheridan Shelley said three men burst into the internet cafe, which was formerly a Quincy’s Restaurant, about 4 a.m. Tuesday and announced a robbery.

Shelley said that during the robbery attempt, 18-year-old Mark Spivey was shot multiple times by an Allied Veterans security guard.

Spivey fled the scene on foot but was soon located by police less than a block away from the business.

“Two other suspects that were with Spivey ran from the business and have not yet been caught,” Shelley said.

Spivey remains in a local hospital under police guard and he will face charges associated with the armed robbery attempt and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Internet cafés have gained in popularity in recent years as they contain low-payout slot machines, but some authorities in other areas of the state have raided the establishments, saying they skirt gambling laws.

A number of internet cafés in nearby counties in Florida also have been the targets of armed robbers because of the amount of cash circulating in the businesses.

Last October a man was shot and killed during an armed robbery attempt of an internet cafe in Seminole County.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477) or the Melbourne Police Department’s Crime Tip Line at 321-409-2259.

  1. Did anyone find out what his training and background was? I’d really like to know because this is amazing and it’s rare that we see reactions like this from a security guard. I worked armed security for several years and you REALLY have to take it upon yourself to keep your skills up.

  2. All I can say is I practice as much as possible. I do a lot of dry fire drills. I look at everyplace I work in and make a plan of attack and defend. I even do that off duty in my normal life. It’s a lifestyle I chose to live because I will not become a number or let the innocent people around me become a number on the list of victims. I myself as well as every individual in there job or normal life is and always be the “FIRST RESPONDER”. I am not saying the L.E.O’s are not doing there job. I’m only saying that they are a phone call away and it takes time for any help or aid to reach you. I refuse to stand by and be a victim or watch innocent people become victims. Evil is all around and unpredictable. The only way to stop evil is to be prepared and understand that evil has no law. That evil will not ask or offer, evil will take. Evil will take what it wants and will not stop to think about who it hurts or kills. I stand for innocents. I stand for life. I will defend innocents from the evil people in this world.
