Bilked Elderly Resident Out of Cash

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Police in Cocoa Beach have apprehended a scam artist using a con game that’s been around for decades.

Cocoa Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Major Jay Harmon said a resident reported being bilked after having been informed they had won a large cash prize.

To receive the prize, the elderly victim had to send the scam artist a cash payment to cover the transaction fees.

“While thieves have come up with new and inventive ways to ply their trade, this particular scheme continues to make its rounds and surfaced again in Cocoa Beach last week for one unfortunate resident,” Harmon said. “Some victims are bilked out of thousands of dollars before they discover the fraud and sadly, many don’t report it out of embarrassment.”

Harmon said Cocoa Beach detectives traced the transactions to Trinette Lashonda Johnson of Lakeland, 38.

A warrant for her arrest was issued and Johnson was arrested and charged with grand theft of a person over the age of 65 and a scheme to defraud.’

Johnson is currently being held in the Brevard County Jail on a $65,000 bond.
