Huba Perfect Through Day One of ITA South Regional

LAKELAND, FLORIDA – Junior Kristina Huba advanced in the singles draw to the round of 16 with a clean sweep, 6-0, 6-0, in her second round match.Huba then teamed with Stephanie Dohner to advance to the doubles quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional Championships on Thursday at the Beermann Family Tennis Center in Lakeland.

Huba earned a first round bye in the singles draw, placing her first match of the championships in the round of 32. Huba swept her opponent, Jill Furlong of West Alabama, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Abbey Keister and Katie Close both won their opening matches in the round of 64 in straight sets. Keister defeated West Alabama’s Emily Gerding, 6-1. 6-3. Close earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Eckerd’s Gipson Hawn. Both Keister and Close fell in the second round.

In doubles, Huba and Dohner advanced to the quarterfinals. The pairing knocked off Valdosta States’ Alina Nagel and Lauren Ubeda, 8-2, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, the duo was victorious over Mona Mansour and Olivia Matuszak of Barry, 8-5. Huba and Dohner will face Florida Southern’s–the host institution–Sabine Goge and Magda Riutort in the quarterfinals.

The ITA South Regional Championships will resume action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with doubles play. The women’s draws will be played at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center on the campus of Florida Southern on day two.
