GAINESVILLE, Fla. — After incremental steps at improvement against lesser opponents, the Florida Gators took a leap forward Saturday, beating Louisiana State, 14-6, and perhaps signaling a shift of power in the Southeastern Conference.
This season, the Tigers were again expected to rival Alabama for SEC supremacy, which has recently translated to national supremacy. But now the Tigers will slide from No. 4, with the Gators most likely moving up several notches from the No. 10 ranking they held entering the game.
For Florida, which won national championships as recently as 2006 and 2008, it is familiar turf, even if the memory of being a national power was starting to fade.
“We know a lot of people have doubted us, but I think the swagger never left,” said Florida defensive back Matt Elam, who caused a key fumble by Tigers receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after Beckham caught a 56-yard pass in the third quarter, the longest play from scrimmage either team managed.
