BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Early ridership numbers for Space Coast Area Transit, Brevard’s Public Transportation System, reveal more than 2,060,000 passenger boardings for its fixed-route buses for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

That represents a 12 percent increase in ridership over Fiscal Year 2011 and the 20th consecutive year of ridership gains. Fiscal Year 2012 productivity of 25.52 passengers per hour of service is also a record.

Both the State Road 520 and A1A corridors remain as the service areas with the most passenger boardings.

The Palm Bay/Melbourne area shows the largest growth in the system, along with the most productive route in the County between US Highway192 and Palm Bay Road.

“It’s quite an amazing accomplishment,” said Transit Services Director Jim Liesenfelt, “especially when you realize that we passed the one-million boarding plateau just five years ago. It shows you how hard our employees work every day to provide needed transportation to our customers.”

Space Coast Area Transit’s fixed route service operates 23 buses on 16 routes Monday through Friday, 14 routes on Saturday and 3 routes operating on Sunday. All transit buses are wheelchair-lift equipped.

SCAT has a trip planner on its www.RideSCAT.com website to assist passengers with transportation needs. Passengers can access a map and text directions from their front door, to the closest bus stop, to their final destination and back again.
