Devoted To The Work Of The Women’s Center

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

Rachel Terry lives her life by these words from 19th century American author and  clergyman Edmund Everett Hale. Throughout her life, Terry has never refused to step in to help.

“We always gave back and did what you needed to do,” said the Titusville resident. “In my journey and relationships, I have learned from the best.”

While growing up in Eastern Tennessee, Terry was active in everything from Girl Scouts to Eastern Star. When her husband took a job with the Brevard Public Schools, she transferred her philosophy of helping to her new community.

President of the North Guild of the Women’s Center, Rachel Terry has also focused on raising money for an organization she considers critical to the community. Terry’s devotion to the work of the Women’s Center stemmed in part from a tragedy that hit too close to home after a Parrish employee was murdered by a family member.

From 1964 to February of this year, Terry served as administrative assistant to the president of Parrish Medical Center. “Even when I was working, I supported the volunteer programs of the hospital,” she said.

She went to bat for the Parrish Auxiliary so often that the volunteer group bestowed an honorary membership upon Terry in 1978. “I fell in love with the Titusville area and its services,” said Terry.

Particularly dear to Terry’s heart is the Pilot Club of Titusville, part of Pilot International, an international service organization of business and professional leaders who want to help those in need and make the world a better place. The inspiration for the name is derived from the riverboat pilots who would steer a true course, whether the waters were calm or troubled.

With Pilot Club, Terry served two terms as president and worked on the district level. One of the club’s projects included supporting the Anchor Club of Astronaut High School students who in turn would help at Joe’s Club Adult Day Care of the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Through her work with Pilot Club, Terry has helped raise thousands of dollars for Joe’s Club, as well as for North Brevard Charities. For example, as chairman of the fundraising division, Terry helped to orchestrate a fashion show that earned more than $11,000 for these organizations.

Her strong faith carries her through any of life’s difficulties.  “Each one of us has an opportunity to make a difference,” said Terry, a member of First Baptist Church of Titusville.

“I’m here today because of God.”

ABOUT THE 2012 CENTRAL FLORIDA HUMANITARIAN AWARDS

The Central Florida Humanitarian Awards were created to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations that dedicate their Time, Talent or Treasure to help people in need locally – and around the world.

This year, more than 40 deserving humanitarians will be honored during the Gala, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, with the festivities beginning at 6 p.m.

“Over the years, our editorial team has had the distinct honor and pleasure of identifying and featuring the many members of our community who give back so much and are dedicated to reaching out and helping others, here and throughout the world, in a multitude of ways,” said Maverick Multimedia Editor-In-Chief Dr. Jim Palermo.

All Humanitarian alumni are presented a specially commissioned medallion.

“We remain firmly committed to identifying and telling those stories and providing a timely media platform to recognize Space Coast and Central Florida residents’ altruistic contributions on a regular basis in our magazines, as well as SpaceCoastDaily.com,” said Dr. Palermo.

This inspiring and compelling event is sponsored by Brighthouse Networks, Health First, Brevard Physicians Network, MPAC ACO, Community Credit Union, Kindred Hospital, Knudson Brain & Spine Law Injury Office, Florida Pain, Space Coast Medicine & Active Living magazine, CentralFloridaMedicine.com and SpaceCoastDaily.com.
