Truck Crashes At Wickham Park Injuring Five

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A Wickham Park crash involving a speeding pickup truck sent five people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Melbourne Police Department  Traffic Sgt. Marty Miller said at about 4 p.m. Wednesday a 2003 Ford pickup truck driven by Joel Thomas of Melbourne, 26, left the roadway inside Wickham Park at a high rate of speed.

Miller said the truck struck holiday decorations, a wooden barrier fence, a concrete picnic table and a large pine tree.

The force of the collision caused the two passengers in the open bed of the truck to be ejected.

According to Miller there also were two passengers in the front cab of the truck who were injured.

Injured were the driver, Joel Thomas, James Powell, 32, Megan Leko, 24, Susan Meracle, 27, and Thomas Whitenhater, 31.

All received non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Miller said the cause of the crash remains undetermined and charges are pending upon further investigation.
