BREVARD COUNTY • MIMS, FLORIDA – A Titusville pedestrian walking on a sidewalk near Holder Park was struck and killed by a drunk driver on Sunday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said William C. Thomas III of Titusville was walking on a sidewalk near the intersection of Holder Road and Holder Park drive about 7:55 a.m. Sunday when a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Martin A. Hardin III of Mims, 23, approached.

Montes said that Hardin was traveling north on Holder Road and entered a right-hand curve when he lost control of the vehicle.

The Taurus left the roadway onto the west shoulder, crossed both lanes of Holder Road and departed the roadway onto the east shoulder, striking Thomas and entering the woods on the west shoulder before coming to a stop.

Hardin fled the scene on foot, but troopers located him hiding behind a fence close to the crash.

Thomas was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne where he was pronounced dead.

Montes said that alcohol consumption was a factor in the crash.

Hardin was transported to Parrish Medical Center in Titusville where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

He was arrested for DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident and booked into the Brevard County Jail.
