BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – An armed man held police at bay overnight Wednesday while barricaded inside a residence in Titusville before shooting himself when a SWAT team entered the house.

Lt. Matt Demmond of the Titusville Police Department said officers were notified about 7 p.m. Tuesday of a 19-year-old man who had made suicidal threats at 3220 Melody Lane in Titusville.

“Officers observed the subject holding a gun in his hand,” Demmon said.  “Multiple attempts to try and speak to the subject were met with negative results.”

At that point, the Titusville Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT were called in to assist.

The subject did not engage in any conversation with members of the Crisis Negotiation Team, so additional efforts were made by using the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Robot Team to establish lines of communication, according to Demmon.

“All efforts at communication with the subject were unsuccessful,” he said.

The SWAT team eventually made entry into the residence Wednesday morning and prior to reaching him, the man shot himself.

Immediate medical attention was available by a SWAT medic at the scene and he was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
