St. Petersburg Extends BCC Losing Streak

Women's Basketball Squad Drops 16th Straight
BREVARD COUNTY, FL – Brevard Community College’s women’s basketball team got off on the wrong foot against St. Petersburg College on Wednesday in dropping a 66-51 decision at the Melbourne Campus gym.
St. Petersburg held BCC to 18 first-half points on Wednesday to storm to a 40-18 lead and kept BCC at bay the rest of the way. BCC also was held to 18 first-half points in its 75-32 loss at St. Petersburg on Jan. 9.
BCC fell to 2-19 and 0-6 in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference in losing its second game of the conference season to first-place St. Petersburg (15-6 and 6-0).
The Lady Titans have lost 16 straight games. BCC played its third straight game without injured sophomore co-captain and leading scorer Shaneece Stephens.
But BCC head coach Renee Bellamy saw a bright side to the outcome.
“What we wanted to do tonight was to make sure we didn’t get blown out,” she said. “The first game we played against St. Pete we didn’t come ready to compete. I told the girls it was very, very important that we closed the gap and that we at least improved the margin from the first game.
“I’m proud of them. They did what I asked them to do and they worked hard.”
Sophomore Briana Reeves led BCC with 11 points. Classmate and co-captain Kasie Berry and freshman Nuri Muhammad added 10 apiece.
Antqunita Reed and Ayshia McNeil led St. Petersburg with 13 points apiece while Thomia Wadley added 10.
In other BCC women’s team news, three Lady Titans earned conference player of the week honorable mention for the week ending Jan. 20. They were sophomore co-captain Kasie Berry who scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded four steals against Miami Dade on Saturday; freshman Tomoriya Hamm who scored 15 points, grabbed three rebounds, recorded three assists and two steals and freshman Nuri Muhammad who scored 17 points, had three rebounds and four steals.
Next up for BCC is a conference trip to Broward College at 2 p.m. Saturday. Its next home game is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 against Miami Dade.
