BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Firefighters from  four agencies helped extinguish a fast-moving fire Wednesday that consumed more than 15 acres of brush on Merritt Island and threatened nearby homes.

Brevard County Fire Rescue, members of the Merritt Island and Cape Canaveral Volunteer Fire Departments and the Florida Forest Service assisted in stopping the fire, which was reported about 1 p.m. Wednesday south of the Kennedy Space Center.

As the fire grew in size near homes on Wildwood Avenue near Chase Hammock Lane north of Courtenay Parkway, some residents evacuated the scene on their own.

But crews were able to prevent the situation from growing larger and were able to put out the brush fire by mid-afternoon.
