Freshman Leads Way For Florida Tech

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA – Florida Tech continued its record-setting performance in the third day of the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championship on Friday, besting eight school records between the men’s and women’s teams.

Panthers freshman Zac Paryzek provided the strongest performance of the evening in the 400 yard individual medley.

He touched the wall in a school-record time of 4:05.90 which was good enough to grab an NCAA B Cut in the event.

The women’s team started the evening with a school record of its own in the 200 yard medley relay.

Shelby Pearce, Schelli Linz, Liana Soileau and Madison Hart combined for a time of 1:52.18 in the race to break the school mark by more than three seconds.

Pearce had already set an individual mark earlier in the day, swimming the 400 yard individual medley preliminaries in a time of 4:40.68, a more than 30-second improvement on the school record. She would go on to finish fifth in the consolation finals.

Soileau also used the prelims to set a school-best time in the 100 yard butterfly en route to qualifying for the finals in the race. The freshman completed the finals race in eighth place. Teammate Kristen Jones also swam in the consolation finals of the event, finishing fifth in the race.

Linz collected the final school record of the day on the women’s side in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:08.20 was good enough for fourth in the consolation finals. Hart closed out the day for the women’s team with a seventh place finish in the consolation finals of the 100 yard backstroke.

For the men, Paryzek began with his strong 400 yard IM performance, with teammates Oz Wasserman and Ben Hoerlein also competing in the race. The two finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the consolation final.

Sophomore Steven Moodie followed with the second record-setting mark in the 100 yard butterfly. Moodie finished fourth in the consolation final in a time of 51.19.

FreshmenTrevor Eastin and Tyler Hemingway battled next in the 200 yard freestyle, touching the wall just three seconds apart as Eastin set the school record in 1:44.53.

Freshman Brian Dumont completed the last record of the day in the 100 yard breaststroke when he swam a final race in 57.45 seconds to finish sixth overall. Ross Donatelli and Hoerlein each competed in the race, as well, finishing fourth and seventh in the consolation final.

The Panthers closed out the day with a sixth-place finish by Sam Trible in the consolation final of the 100 yard backstroke. Trible out-touched teammate Kaikea Nakachias the two finished sixth and seventh in the consolation final.

The conclusion of the SSC Championship begins Saturday morning with the prelims of the 200 yard backstroke, 100 yard freestyle, 200 yard breaststroke, 200 yard butterfly and the 1,650 yard freestyle. The finals of each of these events will begin in the evening. The meet will conclude with the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The prelims begin at 10 a.m. at the Long Center with the finals starting at 6 p.m.
