Sgt. Sheridan Shelley of the Melbourne Police Department said Matthew James Sharp of 2160 Grand Teton Blvd. in Melbourne, 22, has been charged with murdering Leah Yoresh at her home at 1433 Albert Drive on Jan. 11.

Shelley said police officially charged Sharp on Friday with First Degree Murder.

Sharp was originally arrested Jan. 17 for Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle after he and two other men were spotted driving Yoresh’s 2012 Hyundai in north Melbourne.

During the course of the murder investigation, crucial evidence was uncovered that connected Sharp to the homicide, Shelley said.

This evidence included bloody shoe prints at the murder scene that matched the shoes worn by Sharp.

In addition, Shelley said Crime Scene Technicians found blood on Sharp’s shoes. This blood was sent off for DNA testing and the results were a match for the victim.

Also, between the date of the murder and the day he was located in the stolen vehicle, Shelley said Sharp attempted to use Yoresh’s credit cards at different stores to purchase gas, food, video games and a television.

The manner in which Yoresh, 35, died is not being released at this time as it is part of the ongoing investigation.

Sharp has been in the Brevard County Jail since his Jan. 17 arrest.
