BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – An elderly man was hurt and a Palm Bay police officer sustained minor injuries following a collision Tuesday afternoon in Palm Bay.

Palm Bay Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez said that just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Palm Bay police officer was traveling south on U.S. Highway 1 after clearing a call.

According to multiple witnesses, as the driver of a burgundy colored 2010 Honda Accord attempted to turn onto Port Malabar Boulevard from northbound U.S. Highway 1, he failed to yield the right-of-way and the officer could not avoid hitting the vehicle.

Martienz said the driver of the Honda Accord, Festin Socrates of Palm Bay, 87, will be cited for careless driving and failure to yield right-of-way.

The name of the police officer has not been disclosed.

He is in good condition at the hospital and will be treated and released, Martinez said.

Socrates is listed in stable condition at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.
