Exhibition Features Work Of French Photographer

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Florida Institute of Technology’s Foosaner Art Museum is exhibiting the work of French photographer Léon Herschtritt through May 12.

The exhibition will feature Herschtritt’s body of work from 1960s Paris.

Through his artistic nuances and choices of political, social and human subjects, Herschtritt’s 57-year body of work glimpses the human experience of his time. His photos include slices of Parisian life, and views of Africa and the Berlin Wall.

Born in Paris in 1936, Herschtritt received a classical education at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Photographie (National School of Photography) in Arles, France.

After army service in Africa, he created his first book, a documentary series, Kids of Algeria. He was honored for the book in 1960 with the Prix Niépce, an award created in 1955 to honor the outstanding work of a photographer under the age of 50.

Today, Herschtritt remains the youngest photographer to win. He then became a reporter and photojournalist for the news magazine France Observateur and worked as a freelance correspondent for the Camera Press of London in Paris, an agency that distributed his photographs to newspapers and magazines in more than 50 countries.

During his career, Herschtritt opened the first photography bistro in Paris; wrote, directed, and produced a number of short films; and became a dealer and authority on historic photojournalism. Numerous exhibitions in Germany and France have celebrated his long and distinguished career in photography. He lives in Paris.

Herschtritt will present a lecture on his photography and career at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23 in the Harris Community Auditorium at the museum. The lecture is free with admission.

The Foosaner Art Museum is at 1463 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

General admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children and students with ID and free on Thursdays and always for Florida Tech faculty, staff and students with their ID.
