Driver Survives, Another Man Injured

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Police officers from the Melbourne Police Department are investigating a crash near the Eau Gallie Causeway that killed two people late Monday night.

Melbourne Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Sheridan Shelley said that police were dispatched to the east side of the Eau Gallie Causeway for a report of an accident with injuries about 11:42 p.m. Monday.

At the scene, officers found that the accident involved a Chevy Sport Utility vehicle and three men who were fishing off the causeway relief bridge.

Shelley said investigators think the vehicle was traveling west on Eau Gallie Boulevard when the three men, who were on the north shoulder of the road, were struck.

Two of the men who were fishing died as a result of the crash.

Shelley said the impact of the crash pushed one of the men fishing over the relief bridge wall and into the Indian River.

Brevard County Fire Rescue assisted in retrieving the deceased man’s body from the water.

Killed in the accident were Justin Laine Mitchell of Indian Harbour Beach, 25, and Ronald Garrett Viccaro of Indian Harbour Beach, 24.

Jeffrey Forrest Vanreenen of Melbourne, 41, survived the crash and was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center for treatment and is listed in stable condition.

The driver of the SUV, Vincent Curtis Worbington of West Melbourne, 43, stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators, Shelley said.

Shelley said the crash remains under investigation.
