BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Mike Khatib of Palm Bay was driving north of I-95 when he says his car started losing power at exit 176, one mile south of the Palm Bay Road Exit.

“Smoke started coming from the engine, and by the time I stopped the car flames were visible from under the hood,” said Khatib.

Several passers by stopped to help call 911 and firefighters from both Palm Bay Fire Rescue and Brevard County Fire Rescue responded to extinguish the fire.

“It all happened so fast I had no time.” Khatib said.

Both north bound lanes of I-95 were closed, but have since been reopened.

Khatib just returned two weeks ago from Afghanistan where he was deployed as a civilian contractor for the past two years.

“I just picked up the car from the mechanic’s shop Friday,” Khatib said. The car was being serviced for a fuel problem that started after being parked while Khatib was deployed.

The cause of the fire is yet known – stay tuned to SpaceCoastDaily.com for an update.

  1. I was one of the ff on scene and I was wondering if you had other pictures of the vehicle firethat you could email me. Thank you.

  2. Thank you Michael Moore for taking these pictures. However, I fire started in the back above the rear right tire. Also, I was in the Middle east/Iraq and not afghanistan. Michael
