TRAFFIC CONTROL

A common ticket for red light cameras includes failing to stop completely before the stop line when making a right turn. In Florida it is legal to make a right turn on red (unless otherwise posted), however, you must make a full stop before the white stop line prior to proceeding.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Drivers at a pair of South Brevard intersections will notice new red light cameras in the next few weeks.

In addition to the new red light cameras, high visibility signs will also be posted at each location warning drivers.

In addition to the new cameras, high visibility signs will also be posted at each location warning drivers. City officials have said the system will not cost taxpayers aand is funded by violators. Officials said each violation will be reviewed to determine if the $158 fine is warranted.

Those who are ticketed will have a right to appeal – tickets issued by red light cameras are not initial uniform traffic citations. If a driver pays the fine within the allotted time no citation is issued and no points assessed against a driver’s license.

Authorities cite public safety as the primary reason that the cameras are installed, while opponents contend their use is more for financial gain than for safety.

MUST MAKE FULL STOP ON RIGHT TURN

In addition to failing to stop for the red light, it’s important for drivers to learn how the cameras work. If your vehicle does not come to a full and complete stop before the white stop line on the pavement, you will be considered a violator.

  1. Red Light cameras are just a revenue generator for the city. But the companies who contract to install them and operate them are the ones that make the most off them. Many cities throughout the U.S. are removing them finding that they aren’t the revenue generators they thought they would be and that they create more problems than they solve. I guess Melbourne officials didn’t do much research.

  2. Red light cameras cause as many accidents as they are supposed to prevent because of people slamming on their brakes to keep from going through a yellow light that “might turn red”. The City of Melbourne should reconsider its decision to install these and the ones responsible for voting them in need to be voted out as soon as possible. The real reason for any city having Red Light Cameras is to extract large amounts of revenue from motorists in a very short period of time which is dishonest in my book.
