BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A Palm Bay motorcyclist was killed Monday afternoon while trying to avoid a collision with a car that had traveled into his path in Melbourne.

Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol said Kelly Painter of West Melbourne, 51, was driving south on Nina Jean Drive in Melbourne about 4:45 p.m. Monday in a 1990 Ford Probe.

At the same time, William Mahlmeister of Palm Bay, 36, was driving east on a 2002 Honda motorcycle in the outside lanes of U.S. Highway 192.

Montes said Painter attempted to travel across the eastbound and westbound lanes of US 192 and came into the direct path of Mahlmeister.

He took evasive action and applied the motorcycle’s brakes, which caused it to skid into the right side of Painter’s vehicle.

Mahlmeister was transported to the hospital where he subsequently died from his injuries.

Montes said Mahlmeister was not wearing a helmet.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
