Florida House bill HB 1097 was advanced 11-7 this week by the Florida House Judiciary Committee allowing “designated employees” to carry guns on school grounds. A bill was also introduced in the Senate, and its fate is unknown with the session concluding soon.

The bill would allow principals to designate select school officials to be armed on school property. Those selected would undergo firearm training.

HB 1097, filed by Rep. Greg Steube of Sarasota, a decorated Iraq War combat veteran said, “With this bill, schools will be better equipped to protect their faculty and students.”

The specific language of the bill reads:

Provides exception to prohibition on possession of firearms or other specified devices on school property or other specified areas for authorized concealed weapon or firearm licensees as designated by school principals or district superintendents; revises applicability of definition; permits district school boards to commission one or more school safety officers on each school campus.

Opponents of the bill say that arming teachers is not the answer, and a knee-jerk reaction to recent tragedies around the country. Supporters of the bill point out that the bill would give schools a fighting chance if they were attacked by armed intruders – as well as act as a deterrent.

  1. Agree. Prisoners have more protection than our children. With the right qualifications and proper evaluations, I agree to guard our children with armed teachers. I agree that not all teachers should be armed, but we have to start protecting our children as they are our future. I would rather be proactive than feel like I didn’t do enough. Guns are like parachutes…if you ever need one and don’t have one… There’s a good chance you’ll never need one again.
