04/23/13 UPDATE AT 12 NOON: POPLOS DIES OF WOUNDS

The suspect involved in the Merritt Island shooting died Monday evening at Cape Canaveral Hospital.

Major Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect involved in the domestic violence incident has been identified as 57-year-old William Emanuel Poplos.  The victim is the 82-year-old fiancé; however, she is not being identified.  The couple lived at 490 Belair Avenue on Merritt Island where the incident took place.

04/22/13 ORIGINAL POST AT 6 PM:

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff deputies, in response to a “shots fired” emergency 911 call, wounded a suspect at 490 Belair Ave. on Merritt Island this evening at about 7 p.m.

According to the 911 call, the suspect had fired several rounds within the residence. Arriving on scene, the deputies determined the incident was domestic related and were confronted by the suspect, who was armed with a handgun.

The deputies responded by firing their duty weapons at the suspect, who was struck and is in critical condition. The suspect, whose identity is not being released, was transported to the Cape Canaveral Hospital Emergency Room.

The deputies involved in the incident have not being identified and are currently assigned to patrol at the East Precinct. They have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure for a deputy involved in a line-of-duty shooting.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Services. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent and parallel investigation regarding the use of deadly force.
