BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Strong pitching from starter David Goforth and an offensive outburst in the first inning sent the Brevard County Manatees to a 4-1 win over the visiting Palm Beach Cardinals on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Each of the first four batters in the first inning reached base for the Manatees (23-20), including a leadoff single for T.J. Mittelstaedt, which was then followed by an RBI double to center for Greg Hopkins.

Hopkins was then driven in by Nick Ramirez as Ramirez singled to right. Three batters later, Yadiel Rivera was able to bring Ramirez across to make it 3-0 in the opening frame.

That was all the help that Goforth (4-4, 2.79) would need, as the only run he allowed to the Cardinals (17-26) came in the third inning. Juan Castillo led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Colin Walsh’s single to left, though Walsh was thrown out trying to stretch to end the inning.

Ramirez added an extra insurance run as he led off the third with his seventh home run of the season. Ramirez, Cody Hawn and Chadwin Stang each had a pair of hits.
