KICKOFF CLASSIC: HERITAGE 13, GAINESVILLE 9
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As predicted, Heritage, on the arm of QB Clinton Moxam, pulled the upset against No. 48 nationally-rated Gainesville.
Playing behind a rebuilt offensive line, Moxam ran, juked, and broke tackles all night, while throwing for over 250 yards.
Heritage’s team speed kept Gainesville from sustaining any long drives until the end of the third quarter.
Gainesville WR Kendric Young (4 x 100 Florida Relay record holder at 38.52) blazed down the field on a 74-yard TD pass at the end of the third quarter. The conversion was blocked, tying the game 6-6.
As advertised, the highly rated Moxam converted a fourth and 1 with a three yard run with 4:56 remaining.
On the next play he found Cheyne Cunningham down the right sideline for a 42 yard gain setting up 1st and goal. Gainesville defense held and Heritage missed a 20 yard field goal wide right.
On the ensuing possession, Terrance Spivey had to make a game-saving tackle from behind as Gainesville pulled the Statue of Liberty pay for a 65-yard gain. Gainesville then hit a 30-yard field goal with 1:11 remaining.
Clinton Moxam then found go-to receiver Cheyne Cunningham down the sideline again. This time for a 76-yard pass down to the five yard line. Dedric Witherspoon then punched in the TD with :55 remaining. Heritage held Gainesville on downs and won 13-9 over the No. 48 ranked team in the nation.
