Brevard's comeback falls short against Daytona

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Manatees loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell 3-2 to the Daytona Cubs on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Entering the bottom of the ninth, Brevard (28-36 second half, 65-66 overall) trailed Daytona (38-19, 73-50), 3-1. With one out, Mitch Haniger drew a walk and then Cody Hawn singled to put runners at the corners.

Greg Hopkins drove in Haniger with a single into right field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Rafael Neda reached on an infield single that loaded the bases. After T.J. Mittelstaedt struck out looking, Brandon Macias stepped to the plate but bounced out to Anthony Giasanti at second to end the game.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Bijan Rademacher singled and then Dustin Geiger reached on a Brandon Macias fielding error. Dan Vogelbach then drew a walk to load the bases.

Another walk from Manatees’ starting pitcher Mark Rogers (0-2, 3.60 ERA) to Anthony Giansanti, plated the first run of the game. Following a strikeout, Chadd Krist singled into right field to drive in Geiger and Vogelbach to give Daytona a 3-0 lead.

Rogers made his sixth rehab start with Brevard County and was ultimately saddled with the loss. He lasted three innings, allowing three runs – all unearned – on four hits and three walks.

The Manatees got one run back in the bottom half of the first. D’Vontrey Richardson led the inning off with a double to center. Yadiel Rivera followed with a single, to put runners at the corners. Richardson then scored on a Mitch Haniger groundout to shortstop.

Alex Moore relieved Rogers in the fourth and tossed four scoreless innings. Moore surrendered just one hit and one walk, while striking out two. Dan Meadows pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the ‘Tees.

The Manatees will travel to Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach for Friday’s game against the Cubs, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Lefty Brent Suter (7-9, 3.40 ERA) will take the mound for Brevard County. The Cubs will send Ivan Pineryo (3-1, 2.93 ERA) to the hill.
