Melbourne Police Arrest Burglary Suspects

SUSPECTS ARRESTED ON UNIVERSITY BLVD.
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Two men suspected of burglary and grand theft were arrested on Monday, Sept. 23.
Arrested were Christopher Hughes, 29, and Courtney Smith, 32, both of of Melbourne, according to the Melbourne Police Department. Both suspects were booked on charges of Burglary to a Residence, Grand Theft and Possession of Burglary Tools.
According to Lt. Daniel Lynch of the Melbourne Police Department, officers were called to the 2200 block of Greenway Dr. in Melbourne reference a neighbor seeing two males smashing out a window of a residence and making entry.
According to Lynch, moments later two Melbourne Police officers located a vehicle matching the description several miles away. Based on the excellent description given by the neighbor, a traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. The suspects tried to flee but ultimately stopped in the 700 block of University Boulevard.
The witness stated the males exited the house carrying expensive electronic equipment. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival but the attentive neighbor gave an excellent description of the suspects and their vehicle.
According to Lynch, moments later two Melbourne Police officers located a vehicle matching the description several miles away. Based on the excellent description given by the neighbor, a traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. The suspects tried to flee but ultimately stopped in the 700 block of University Boulevard.
The investigation culminated with the two male occupants of the vehicle being arrested for the burglary after the officers observed all the stolen electronics in the backseat.
During the arrest of the suspects the officers located rubber gloves and burglary tools which confirmed that these two were involved in the burglary. The Melbourne Police Department Criminal Investigations Division interviewed the suspects and obtained confessions from both suspects.
Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Brevard County Jail.
