Crimeline tips leads to arrest

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Jerome R. Williams, 43, and  Victoria A. Basakli, 43, have been arrested this afternoon for using credit cards stolen from a 93-year-old woman while she shopped on August 26 at the Neighborhood Walmart Grocery on Babcock Street, according to the Melbourne Police.

Williams was charged with 10 counts of Fraudulent Use of Credit Card (10 counts), Forgery (2 counts) and Grand Theft. Basakli was charged with Fraudulent Use of Credit Card and Grand Theft.

Williams, of Tallahassee, and Basakli, of Melbourne, were taken into custody without incident and were scheduled to be interviewed by detectives. After being interviewed, Williams and Basakli will be taken to the Brevard County Jail.

Investigators were able to obtain surveillance photos of the suspects after they used the victim’s credit cards at other Walmart stores. The Melbourne Police Department then released those photos through their Twitter page and to local news media, asking that anyone who could identify the suspects would contact the Central Florida Crimeline.

Only one day after putting out the call for help, anonymous CRIMELINE tips began to pour in and the identity of the suspects were revealed.

This case is still under investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming.

According to Sgt. Sheridan Shelley, a Melbourne Police officer observed a black Toyota backed into a parking spot in front of a closed business on Florida Avenue at 2:27 a.m. this morning. During the officer’s investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle was the same one listed as stolen from the 93-year-old Melbourne woman.

LOCATION OF RECOVERY WAS NEAR WALMART

The location of the recovery was near the Neighborhood Walmart Grocery, which is the same area where the victim originally had a wallet containing a spare car key stolen from her on August 26.

Melbourne Police investigators are still seeking the identity of two suspects in the theft of the wallet and vehicle. Anyone with information on the identity of these people is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). All calls to Crimeline are anonymous and information that leads to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
