Nick Rittenhouse
Nick Rittenhouse

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA – Nick Rittenhouse lead his Space Coast Vipers to a post season berth as the Vipers defeated Atlantic 24-9 in a key District 5 – 4A game last night.

The double threat Rittenhouse rushed for 148 yards and passed for 140, and the Viper defense shut down Atlantic’s C.J. Jones late to secure the win.

Space Coast, which is now 6-3, takes on the winner of tonight’s Clewiston vs. LaBelle game in the first round of the playoffs.

GAME CAPSULES & PREDICITIONS

(1) Heritage vs. (8) Bayside
Rivalry weekend!! Much like FSU/Miami not many give the underdog a chance. Anything can happen in a rivalry game and this match up is for first place in 6A District 14 and home field advantage in the playoffs. Bayside comes in looking to pull the upset of the number #1 ranked team in Brevard and #25 ranked team in Florida. Heritage has outscored opponents 325-39.

Heritage is the best team in the county because of strong defense, special teams, and a consistent running attack. Bayside will need Greg Miclisse and Tomell One to come up big on Defense to slow down this Heritage Offense. Look for Dedric Witherspoon (who is a nominee for Area Player of the Year) to dominate this game. Witherspoon is a powerful runner and always around the ball on defense. Look for Super Sophomore Josh Gaines to have a big night. Heritage wins big and makes a statement going into the playoffs.

Prediction: Heritage 40, Bayside 17

Key Players – Heritage: Clinton Moxam (Sr. QB), Josh Gaines (So. RB), Dedric Witherspoon (Sr. ATH) Bayside: William Harrell (Sr.RB), Lucious McKay (Sr.ATH), Greg Miclisse (Sr. LB)

(2) Cocoa vs. Jones
This series has been won by Cocoa the past 10 years but Jones have been close to pulling the upset many times. Last year Cocoa escaped a late charge by Jones with a 31-24 win at Home. Jones will need that type of effort to keep their playoffs hopes alive and force a tie-breaker to get into the Playoffs. Lorrenzo Pratt leads 4A in scoring with 17 Td and will look to add to that total against a Jones Defense that has given up 216 points in 8 games this season. Jones will need to stop the run to have a chance in this one. Look for Cocoa to dominate on both sides of the ball.

Prediction: Cocoa 42, Jones 7

Key Players –Cocoa: Freddie Booth-Lloyd (Sr, DT, Tulane Commit), James Folston (Sr, ILB, Purdue, Minnesota offers), Jamel Dean (Jr, DB Ohio State offer), Chauncey Gardner (So, DB, Miami Commit), Jamel Jackson (Sr, DB Temple Commit), Lane Burnett (Sr, DL), Tavares Parks (Sr, DL), Lor’renzo Pratt (Sr, RB), Bruce Judson (Fr, QB)

(3) Merritt Island vs. Rockledge
Merritt Island can have a undefeated season and 1st place in the district with a win over Rockledge. The Raiders will need to upset the Mustangs to have a chance of making the Playoffs. Raiders have found recent success with back to back wins. With the season on the line look for Rockledge to play a scrappy game and try to keep the Mustangs off the field with a methodical running game. If Merritt Island scores first this game could hinder the plans of the Raiders and make the game out of reach. Nick Smith and John Batch should score plenty in this one.

Prediction: Merritt Island 24, Rockledge 7

Key Players – Merritt Island: Ty Schwab( Sr. LB Boston College Commit), Shaq Jones (Sr. ATH South Alabama Commit), Nick Smith(Sr,QB), Johnny Batch(Sr,DB), P.J Kellem (Sr. DB), John Batch(Sr. ATH). Rockledge: Jundarius Dukes(Jr,DB), Traven Phillips(Sr. FB), DeAnthony Henderson(Sr. DL)

(4) MCC vs. Holy Trinity
MCC has the longest winning streak in 3A and currently ranked #4 in Brevard. MCC who have dominated most of its opponents this season will be tested by Holy Trinity in the battle for first in the district. Holy Trinity has one of the Top 10 Best Players in Brevard County 2015 Class in J’V’ON Butler. Butler is 6’4 185 and creates a matchup problem for teams as a Reciever and OLB. DB Steven Ralph will have to have a big game to stop Erdman. Perlman, and LeFlore, and the Spread offense of MCC. Look for MCC to spread the ball around with Top 10 Brevard 2015 class QB Brandon Ziarno. MCC wins a hard fought close game in this one.

Prediction: MCC 35 Holy, Tirinity 28

Key Players MCC: Max Erdman(Jr. WR), Austin Perlman (Jr. WR), Brandon Ziarno (Jr. QB), Alec LeFlore (Sr.RB
Holy Trinity: J’V’ON Butler(Jr.ATH), Steven Ralph(Sr. DB),Daniel Welch (Jr. QB), Alex Bouie(Sr. RB)

(5) Melbourne vs. Sebastian River
Melbourne captured 1st place in the District last week with a 40-7 win over Martin County. Look for Melbourne to start to open up the offense in preparation for the Playoff run. Dwane Robinson has been consistent and reliable and the emergence of Chris Singh in the the running game gives Melbourne a hugh advantage in this match up. Look for another dominating district win by Melbourne.

Prediction: Melbourne 35, Sebastian River 10

Key Players Melbourne: Dwane Robinson (Sr. QB), Bryson Hil l(Sr. RB), Chris Singh

(6) Palm Bay vs. Satellite

Palm Bay Struggled to get into the endzone by a tough Merritt Island Island defense. This week they look to establish its running game. If Satellite can pull a upset, and Merritt Island beats Rockledge, Satellite can force a 3 way tie for the last playoff spot in 5A District 12. The longest playoff streak in Brevard County can be in jeopardy if the Pirates remain in 3rd and long like they did last week. Look for Palm Bay to run the ball with Sekai Lindsay and play tough defense.

Prediction: Palm Bay 24, Satellite 14

Key Players – Palm Bay: Stephon Williams(Jr. LB), Alex Jasmin (Sr. DB), Sekai Lindsay (Jr. RB), Reggie Benjamin (Sr. RB), Tyler Allen (Sr. QB), JR Norman (Sr. FB)

(7) Eau Gallie vs. Cocoa Beach
Eau Gallie has won three games in a row to capture second place in the District and would like to continue the recent success against the winless Minutemen. Cocoa Beach has not been able to win the close games this year but have made most of the games very exciting. Having a short roster and key injuries have not stopped Cocoa Beach ATH Antoine Griffin from having a career year. Griffin can do it all on offense and can be the difference maker to pull the upset in this one. Look for Eau Gallie to just have to much depth as they pull away late in this one with outstanding QB Torrance Brown.

Prediction Eau Gallie 30, Cocoa Beach 21

Key Players – Eau Gallie: Torrance Brown (Sr. QB),Antoine Rutledge (Sr. ATH). Cocoa Beach: Antoine Griffin(Sr. ATH), Jamaal Eveillard (Sr. RB), Marvin Conley (Sr. DB)

(9) Viera vs. Martin County
This time last year Viera was 1-7 with a chance to make the Playoffs. In 2013 the hawks are 7-2 and having its best season ever, yet they are eliminated from playoff contention. 7A District 12 is a competitive District and Viera would like nothing more than to get another District win. This Viera program is headed in the right direction under Coach Kevin Mays. Look for the Hawks to come out and play inspired Football with a dominating performance against Martin County. Cody Dentmon plays big in this district win.

Prediction: Viera 42, Martin County 12

Key Players • Viera: Tre Nixon (So, WR), Devin Nixon (Jr, ATH), Cody Dentmon (Sr, QB), Zack Blanch (So, RB)

(10) Space Coast vs. Atlantic
Space Coast can make the playoffs for the first time since 2008 with a win against Atlantic. The Vipers just two weeks ago were 6-1 and looking to be in pretty good shape. But with consectutive defeats they find themselves playing for the last spot in 4A District 5. Atlantic who can also make the playoffs with a win hope to have back CJ Jones who missed the last game with a leg injury. Nick Rittenhouse who is #3 in passing ,and #3 in total yards in all of Florida will need to have another efficient game to lead Space Coast into the Playoffs.

Prediction: Space Coast 30, Atlantic 21

Key Players – Space Coast: Nick Rittenhouse (Sr, QB), Chase Colantino (Sr,WR), Ellijah Milledge (Jr, DL), Alec Dansereau (Jr, WR)
Atlantic: CJ Jones(Sr, RB)
