dogs, inmates learn from each other

PAWS-STRIPES-580-1
Paws and Stripes is a Brevard County Jail program that selects dogs from local shelters and pairs them up with selected inmates. The inmates and dogs go through an 8 week training period. Dogs who successfully complete the program will end up with skills such as heel, sit, recall and stay. Each dog is house-trained, leash-trained and becomes responsive to voice commands and hand signals. Dogs are then returned to the shelter they came from and are adopted out at the regular adoption fee. (BCSO image)

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – This week, we held a Graduation Ceremony for our “Paws And Stripes” program at our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Complex on Park Ave. in Titusville.

“Paws and Stripes” works in partnership with local animal rescue shelters to provide a safe haven for rescue dogs while also helping to develop the inmates in areas such as responsibility and nurturing. (BCSO image)

The event was open to the general public and was attended by many of our partners from the various local animal shelters as well as members of our agency.

Everyone in attendance enjoyed the Graduation Ceremony that included the Rescue Dogs performing tricks and obedience skills they were taught by the female inmates during the Paws and Stripes Program.

I would like to personally thank Deputies Soto and Twigg for everything they do to make this program a reality for everyone involved and also thank everyone who has adopted one of our Paws and Stripes Dogs in the past.

Please visit us at BrevardSheriff.com for more information on how to adopt one of our incredible dogs.
