Melbourne Police Investigate High School Bomb Threat

MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Melbourne Police Officers responded to Melbourne High School today to investigate a bomb threat.

According to Melbourne Police Department, just before 9 a.m., a Melbourne Police Communications Officer received a call from an individual who stated he had placed an explosive device in an unspecified building at Melbourne High School.

School staff was notified of the threat and an evacuation plan was set in place.

Officers worked in conjunction with school staff to escort students to a nearby field while other officers assisted with setting a perimeter around the campus.

Two explosive detection dogs from Port Canaveral Police Department also responded to the scene. One school building was immediately searched to determine there were no threatening items nside. Once the building was deemed safe, all students were brought inside to shelter them from the approaching midday sun and heat.

With the aid of the bomb detection dogs, officers searched each building, common area and parking lot of the campus. No suspicious items were located. Once the entire school was cleared, officers remained on scene as family members were reunited with students.
