BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – It took 11 innings, but the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Bright House Field and completed a three-game sweep, thanks to a go-ahead single by Brandon Macias.

Tyrone Taylor

Macias delivered the big hit with two outs in the top of the 11th. Tyrone Taylor was on second after working a walk and Michael Reed was on first with a single.

Macias – who was 0-for-4 coming into his extra-innings at-bat – hit a hard ground ball past the diving glove of third baseman Harold Martinez, to plate Taylor.

Clearwater had to come back to tie the game after trailing by as many as five runs. Brian Pointer got the Threshers started in the sixth inning when he led off with an inside-the-park home run to center field.

The ball hit the base of the wall and ricocheted away from Taylor, which allowed Pointer to sprint home and cut the Manatees’ lead to four runs.

Later in the sixth, Clearwater added a pair more runs to further cut into the deficit. Brevard (14-12) held its 6-4 lead, however, until the eighth inning. With two outs and a runner on, Martinez hit a towering home run over the left field wall to knot the score at 6-6.

Brevard starting pitcher Tyler Wagner did not factor in the decision as he went five-plus innings and allowed four runs – two earned – on five hits. Wagner also walked one and struck out four.

The Threshers (5-21) had a chance for a walk-off win in the ninth. William Carmona worked a lead-off walk and Anthony Phillips came in to pinch run. Justin Parr bunted him over to second and Phillips advanced to third on a ground out to Mike Garza.

Pointer came up with two outs and Phillips 90 feet away, representing the tying run. In a surprise move, Pointer laid down a bunt toward first. The bunt rolled past reliever Chad Pierce and Garza picked it up, then raced to the bag, dove and tagged first base with his glove before Pointer got there.

Michael Garza

Michael Garza

Garza’s effort prevented the winning run from scoring and sent the game to extra innings.

Tanner Poppe closed out the game in the bottom of the 11th, but not without some drama. Poppe allowed a walk and a single with two outs. With the tying run on second and the winning run on first, the right-hander struck out Chad Carman to end the game. Poppe earned his seventh save of the season and Pierce picked up the win.

Five of Brevard’s seven runs came in the sixth inning when the Manatees batted around. Victor Roache started the scoring with a two-run triple that plated both Taylor and Reed.

Yadiel Rivera

Two batters later, Roache would come home on a Yadiel Rivera single to right. After Parker Berberet popped out, Garza singled to put two on with two out. Nathan Orf would then clear the bases with a double to right.

Reed reached base five times as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and a walk. He has reached base 11 times in his last 13 plate appearances.

Rivera recorded three hits and two RBI, while Orf, Berberet and Garza tallied two hits each.

After completing their second series sweep of the season, the Manatees return home on Thursday night to start a six-game homestand. The ‘Tees begin with a three-game series against the Tampa Yankees (13-12) at 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.46) is expected to start for the ‘Tees against Yankees’ lefty Eric Wooten (2-1, 2.30).
