BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn citizens of a scam that has been occurring with multiple variations in and around Brevard County.
The scammers call a victim claiming to be from a law enforcement agency and states that you failed to show up for jury duty or have failed to pay a traffic ticket. Another scam will state that a grandchild is in jail and needs to bond out.
With all calls, the scammer will ask for a prepaid money card such as Greendot or Walmart to be purchased. The caller then demands that the victim purchase the card and immediately provide the card number and security code over the phone.
The scammers will try to keep the victim on the telephone, threatening the victim with arrest or possible harm to their grandchild.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office along with multiple agencies in Brevard County has had recent reports of this scam.
Citizens should be advised that this is not a law enforcement officer or Clerk of Court employee. Law enforcement will never call or email to cancel a warrant or jury duty in exchange for payment. Citizens receiving any similar request should immediately contact their local law enforcement agency.
