According to the Melbourne Police Department, the missing rifle was in the possession of a currently employed Melbourne police officer, and has been returned to the Melbourne Police Department.

It was in a secure location within the officer’s residence.

The rifle had been issued to the officer in the past, however, due to an oversight in equipment issuance and inventory procedures it was missed in the audit.

The investigation into this incident continues, shifting toward existing inventory control systems to identify and eliminate weaknesses, to improve the system overall, and to determine appropriate accountability.
