BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — With the 2014 primary election less than a week away, Brevard County Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott demonstrates the county’s newest equipment.

With recent enhancements to hardware and sofware, the SOE office can count and process election results at a faster and more efficient rate than previous methods used in past elections.

According to systems administrator Clinton Branch, the new ballot counting machines are capable of counting  up to 300 ballots per minute, and allows for stacks of ballots to be inserted, rather than the traditional method of one ballot at a time.

FACTS ABOUT THE NEW EQUIPMENT:

Optical Scanner:

  • Should a voter accidentally overvote, the optical scanner will notify the voter that they over-voted and give them the opportunity to correct their ballot.
  • Will reduce number of poll workers from an average of 15 per polling location to 11.

Ballot Counting Machine:

  • Capable of counting 300 per minute.
  • Detects ballots that are over-voted and moves the ballot in a designated bin for human review.
