‘This Community Is Very Giving, With Willing Hearts and Hands’

CENTRAL FLORIDA, USA – Most of the volunteer activities that consume Judy Roub’s time have one common denominator: Children.

ROUB-JUDY-BRYAN-580-1She devoted her energy to raising her and husband Bryan’s three sons, but found she had more to give – and many kids who needed help. Among those who have benefited from her work are the residents of The Haven for Children.

The Haven is licensed by the state Department of Children and Families to provide therapeutic shelter in a homelike environment for neglected, abused or abandoned children.

The effort began as a project of the Junior League of South Brevard and started with one home in 1987. Gradually, two more homes were added. Today, the organization operates three homes, providing care for up to 35 children from birth to age 18.

“The staff is amazing,” Roub said. So are the volunteers. Seven days a week, volunteers provide a home-cooked meal for the children.

FOUNDING MEMBER OF HAVEN GUILD

Roub is a founding member of the Haven Guild, the fundraising arm of the Haven.

Operated completely by volunteers, the shop is located in Brevard County at 1765 S. Patrick Drive in Indian Harbour Beach. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The Guild also throws an annual birthday party for the Haven. In the early years, people brought gifts. Today, cash donations come in that allow the organization to purchase what it needs.

Bryan Roub, a former Harris Corp. executive, also gives of his time, recently serving on the board of directors of The Women’s Center.

The Haven has a special place in Roub’s heart for another reason: Two of her nine grandchildren were adopted from one of its homes.

Roub also has worked with the Brevard Zoo and has served on the board of AMIKids Space Coast, which helps youth from troubled pasts chart a course for their futures. Beds at the Haven are always filled, with many requests for placement denied for lack of room.

But rather than be overwhelmed by the need, Judy Roub is grateful for those willing to help.

“There’s a lot of need out there,” she said. “But this community is very giving. It’s not hard to find willing hearts and hands.”
