BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The top senior high school volleyball players on the Space Coast went head-to-head on Sunday when they competed in the always exciting annual Brevard County Senior Showcase Volleyball Match.
The South won in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22. The North coaches included Angie Patrick of Merritt Island and Lindsay Tipton of Space Coast. The South coaches included Patrick Barrett of Melbourne Central Catholic and Pete Klonowski of Holy Trinity.
Kiersten Rosa of Astronaut High and Kiara Barrett of Melbourne Central Catholic were the North and South MVPs, respectively. Rosa had 20 assists.
Kill leaders for the South included Alana Shoff and Raquel Kulakall of Melbourne Central Catholic who had seven each. Summer Seage of Edgewood and Skylar Lierse of Merritt Island each has seven kills for the North.
“I was really pleased with how well the team passed in serve receive and how well they gelled on the court, after just one practice with everyone,” said Barrett.
“Our defensive specialists, Jenny, Marisol, and Aviana, really stepped up to the plate with their passing and defense to give us the opportunity to run our offense.”
The match, which was first played in 1997, was sponsored by SpaceCoastDaily.com, Space Coast Sports Promotions and the Friday Night Locker Room. All proceeds from the game will be donated to the Brevard Schools Foundation.
Steve Wilson and Orville Susong of the Friday Night Locker Room called all the action as they live streamed the game on SpaceCoastDaily.com.
“The North team defense couldn’t contain the big hitters at the net,” said Patrick.
“The North was stronger on the outside and right side with Skylar Lierse, Summer Seage and Rasheena Mansel leading the offense. Kiersten had a lot of new hitters to work with and her first time playing with them was in the match due to being out of town for the holidays. Considering that, she did a great job. Rachel Petkosh (MIHS) did a great job on defense and serve receive.”
Eastern Florida State hosted the match at the college’s Melbourne campus athletic facility, and the competition once again features a North – South format.
“I was really pleased with how the girls played together,” said Barrett.
“It looked like the girls had been playing together for a while, talking to each other, celebrating and helping each other out. They definitely were having a lot of fun on the court.”
