BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Nine Florida writers will read from selected works at a free public event Friday, Feb. 20 on the first floor of Evans Library on the Florida Institute of Technology campus in Melbourne.

FIT_Seal-580“An Evening of Readings” begins with a reception at 6 p.m. The readings start at 6:30 p.m. Book sales and signings follow at 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Writers scheduled to participate are:

• Andrew Aberdein, professor of philosophy at Florida Tech’s School of Arts and Communication. He will read from his essay in the book, Philosophy and the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Ben Brotemarkle, executive director, Florida Historical Society, and author of multiple books, includingBeyond the Theme Parks: Exploring Central Florida and Crossing Division Street: An Oral History of the African American Community in Orlando. He will read from among his recent works.

Joddy Murray

Joddy Murray

Ben Brotemarkle, who was named Honorary County Historian by the Brevard County Commission, is author of Mosquito Soup, Crossroad Towns Remembered and Melbourne: a Century of Memories. Mosquito Soup will be a reading selection.

Ben Brotemarkle, is professor emerita, Florida Tech and a poet and author. She will read from her book,Sweet Surrender, as well as a poem from the publication, Transformations.

Joanie Holzer Schirm

Joddy Murray is the American Council on Education Fellow at Florida Tech and a poet and author. He will ready from Anaphora and Voices in Residence.

Joanie Holzer Schirm, a writer, community organizer and retired Orlando businesswoman,will read from her book Adventurers Against Their Will, which won the 2013 Global Ebook Award for Best Biography.

Winston Scott is senior vice president for external relations and economic development at Florida Tech and a shuttle astronaut. He will read from his book, Reflections from Earth Orbit.

Scott Tilley

• Louise Skellings is professor emerita at Miami Dade College and widow of Edmund Skellings, Florida’s poet laureate from 1980-2012. She will be reading from his Collected Poems, 1958-1998.

• Scott Tilley is a professor in Florida Tech’s Department of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies and director of computing education. He will read from his book Technology Today.
