BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — The Cocoa Beach Optimist Club is hosting a family oriented event for young people, ages 5 to 16, to enter a catch and release fishing contest.

OPTIMIST-180The Great Optimist Fish begins April 25 at Cruise Terminal 3 in Port Canaveral. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the main event will take place from 9 a.m. til noon.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places in four age categories.

All bait, supplies and lunch is supplied free of charge for registered contestants.

Experienced fishermen will be available for instruction in basic fishing, casting, rod and reel selection, knot tying, tackle selection, fishing ethics and conservation principles.

Last year, more than 300 registered contestants along with parents, chaperons, and younger siblings attend this free event.
