BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Merritt Island girls soccer team fell to American Heritage 2-0 in the state semi-final Thursday afternoon.

Despite the weather elements, the Mustangs fought with tremendous heart on the windy rainy day but it was the set pieces and tough defense by Heritage that gave the Patriots the victory.

The Patriots striked their first goal by way of a corner kick that ricocheted in the box, only to have Heritage punch it in with 18 minutes left to go in the first half.

Four minutes later, Patriots struck again off a penalty from 35+ yards out that was beautifully pooched into the box and tapped in to score the final goal on the afternoon.

Merritt Island only gave up six goals on the year.

“Our ultimate goal is a state championship,” said Head Coach Scott Carswell.

“But we did get a district, a region and a conference championship, so we did get three trophies on the year.”

Despite the loss, Merritt Island had a successful season even if they didn’t win the state championship.

“All in all, I’m proud of the kids and no regrets,” said Carswell.

The team finished 18-2-2 on the season, with three more pieces of hardware added to their trophy case but not the one they ultimately wanted.

American Heritage takes on Land O’ Lakes tomorrow night at 8 p.m. for the 3A State Championship held on Eastern Florida State College’s campus in Melbourne.
