BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida Tech men’s swimmer Nir Barnea and women’s track & field participant Rachel Tobin were selected Panther Student-Athletes of the Week.
As the first male swimmer from Florida Tech to compete in the national race, he placed 10th in the 50-yard freestyle finals with a program record time of 19.99.
The marketing major also set a program record in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries at 45.02 for 25th place.
Tobin, a redshirt freshman from Palm Bay, Florida, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Championship in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash at the University of South Florida Invitational last Friday.
She placed fourth in the 100 at 11.85 to set a school record. That time is currently the second-fastest in the country.
The forensic psychology major then came in second to a national team runner from the Bahamas in the 200.
Her mark, a school record time of 24.01, ranks as the fastest in all of NCAA Division II.
Before leaving the track for the day, Tobin and her 4×100-meter relay team of Casie Clark, Maia Carter and Alexis Santiago set a new school record with a time of 48.30, good for third place.
Barnea and the swimming team have reached the offseason and will start training for the 2015-16 season.
Tobin and the track & field team are preparing for the Bulls Invitational hosted by USF on Thursday and Friday in Tampa.
